Description
Simulated quartz crystals line the cavity of this geode-like lamp. Back lighting can be provided in a number of ways from simple white puck lights, to led strips, to black-light LED strips illuminating a fluorescent cone that provides a subtle color gradient to the crystals.
The crystal portion should be printed on a smooth plate to provide a glossy surface for the lamp. This model used Sunlu Clear Transparent PLA for the quartz and blue transparent PLA for the surrounding disk. There will be a forest of supports to remove to clear the crystals. Don't worry about jagged edges, it will just add to the random appearance of the geode.
The shell of the lamp was printed on a normal textured plate using grey PLA.
Assembly is easy - add a light source and slot the disk into the grove on the front of the shell. It will be a loose fit that you can remove to change the lighting as needed. If using a puck light, take the face off the lamp to turn it on or off.
For best effect, use a strip of black-light (UV) LEDs taped to the inside of the shell with the USB cord out the back. Then, print the optional color cone piece on the second print profile using multiple colors of Glow PLA. The profile uses orange, green and blue. Attach the printed cone onto the back of the disk with clear tape. Slot the face onto the lamp and turn on the LEDs. You should see a nice subtle color in the crystals of the lamp.
