Description

I have an enormous range of Rustoleum spray paint in my workshop. They have overflowed onto multiple shelves and occassionally cause a cascade when trying to reach a colour from the back. One day I may well be buried in the tin tsunami.

The aim here was to create a solution that is

  1. Quick to print
  2. Doesn't use much filament
  3. Maximises storage space on a Honeycomb Storage Wall
  4. Makes removing and replacing spray cans easy.

Three out of four is a highschool pass. I'd still like to bring the print time below 30 minutes but it does tick the rest of the boxes. The 15g filament use means you'll get around 60 holders out of a single spool. The base profile is designed to allow each holder to butt up against the other, reducing HSW grid waste. And Rustoleum (and many other) spray cans slot easily in and out without resistance even though the holder can be tilted downwards at a 45° angle without the can falling out.

The design utilises the indent at the base of the can to act as a clip, allowing the tension between the clip at the top of the holder and the small support at the bottom to hold the can securely.

To avoid supports, I've designed a push-through HSW insert that secures the holder to a standard empty HSW insert but, to allow it to sit a little closer to the wall, I've included a low-profile insert that minimises the gap between the HSW grid and the holder.

So far this has been amazing in my workspace and allowed me to clear up two shelves whilst making all colours accessible and easy to locate. I hope it works as well for you.

Constructive feedback is most welcome and allows designers to improve their models for the benefit of everyone.
