The Sukhoi Su-47 fighter jet (Russian: Сухой Су-47, English: Sukhoi Su-47, NATO code: Firkin "Little Barrel", Soviet nickname: Беркут, Chinese: Golden Eagle) is a multi-role supersonic fighter jet developed by the Russian Sukhoi Aviation Group, and is also a technology demonstrator for Russia's next-generation fighter. The nose of the fuselage houses the airborne radar compartment, with a multi-functional phased array radar inside the oval radome with a pitot tube. The mid-fuselage blends with the extended wing strakes, and the wing roots have forward-extending strakes, equipped with canards and forward-swept wings. The Su-47's most significant feature is its forward-swept wing design, which is very similar to the American Grumman X-29 experimental aircraft. During the design and test flight phases, it was given the designations S-32 and S-37. Its maiden flight was on September 25, 1997, and in 2002, its designation was changed to Su-47. As the Su-47 could not meet the Russian military's air combat requirements, its development was ultimately halted. It was not adopted by the Russian military and did not enter mass production.
