Innovation of Tradition
Gameplay Innovation
- Setup and Start The chessboard can be freely arranged (the chessboard is movable and can be arranged freely before the start) The command center can be placed anywhere and in any shape on our side Once the layout is complete, both sides combine their boards into one, and the battle can begin (this is how a real battlefield is, you don't know where the enemy's command center is)
- Capture Mode After capturing an opponent's piece, you can roll a die to decide whether to kill, capture, or let it escape (adding a realistic war mode) Captured pieces can be flipped over to become your own pieces and are returned to your side's backline Escaped pieces belong to the opponent and are returned to their board to restart
- Unpredictability of the Game In traditional Chinese chess, familiar patterns or moves can leave beginners utterly lost, but the reformed Chinese chess is full of randomness from the opening setup to the battle itself This is how real battles are; in addition to tactics and military strength, there are also factors of luck
Current Issues with Chinese Chess
Imbalanced Competitive Threshold
- Experience Gap Beginners often find it difficult to fully enjoy playing against experts, as they are easily overwhelmed and defeated
- Steep Learning Curve Modern people's fragmented time makes it difficult to support the long-term skill refinement required for traditional Chinese chess, leading to an experience gap between beginners and experts
- Disadvantage of Information Transparency The fully visible starting board makes beginners' tactical intentions easy to predict
Elements of the Chessboard
The reformed Chinese chess incorporates elements of war drums and military tallies into the board, symbolizing a real battlefield Once the layout is complete, the war drums signal the start of the war, leaving no retreat
The military tally in the center symbolizes the tallies held by ancient generals Where the tally is, the entire army can be commanded
Double-sided pieces represent unpredictable factors on the battlefield Today they may be Han soldiers, but tomorrow they could be part of the Chu army (this is not disloyalty from the soldiers, but often beyond their control)
