Description
“When the moon is full, it must wane; when prosperity reaches its peak, it must decline” These simple eight characters profoundly elucidate the principle of extremes reversing. Regardless of whether it's a favorable or adverse situation, once things reach their utmost extent, a turning point will invariably occur; it is merely a matter of the degree and nature of that transition.
The Diagram of Waxing and Waning Fortunes discusses the Hexagram of Peace (Tai) and the Hexagram of Obstruction (Pi). The Tai hexagram's depiction features three Yang lines below and three Yin lines above, signifying Yin-Yang balance. The upper trigram represents Kun, or Earth, and the lower trigram represents Qian, or Heaven. The hexagram thus portrays Earth above Heaven, symbolizing an exceedingly prosperous and stable society.Conversely, the Pi hexagram's depiction is precisely the opposite of the Tai hexagram, with Heaven positioned upon the Earth.
Everything possesses limits. The adage “when adversity reaches its extreme, prosperity emerges” signifies that when an individual is at their lowest ebb, alternative paths emerge, and regardless of the direction taken, the journey leads uphill. Conversely, “when prosperity reaches its extreme, adversity follows” means that when an individual is at their zenith, every direction leads downhill. If we could perpetually maintain a state where prosperity transitions into adversity, precisely mastering this equilibrium, would that not be a truly beneficial endeavor?
