US Civil War Grenade with Realistic Clicking Fuze

Summary

Want a rare antique hand grenade from the Civil War?  This model is a realistic replica of the Ketchum grenade, which was one of the earliest hand grenades and was used during the Civil War.  This model has a built in click in the fuze when pressed.  This grenade was thrown a lot like a nerf football, and then upon landing the fuse would be pressed in setting off the grenade.  It's interesting in that it is essentially a precursor to both a modern hand grenade (with a contact fuze) and a mortar (a hand launched mortar that is).

Assembly is super simple and just takes a minute – no glue is required.

Background: The Ketchum grenade was a dart-shaped, Union-issued hand grenade used during the Civil War, designed for throwing during siege warfare. It featured a cast iron body, a wooden tail rod with fins, and a percussion cap that detonated upon impact. However, the grenade's effectiveness was limited, as it often failed to detonate unless it landed nose-first.

Assembly Instructions

Insert the two pegs and the clicker into the bottom piece – note that the clicker has one proper direction, but its easy to see and try out just by trying to insert it.

Next screw the bottom on to the clicker

Then slide the four fins into the wooden stick from the top down

Lastly, insert the stick into the square hole in the grenade….and that's it – click away and enjoy :-)
