Another day, another deck box concept! This time, I wanted to do something more artistic and colourful. It took me four trials re-modeling the same deck from scratch to get the perfect smooth curvature on the edges!

Cards

  • This deck box fits 60 single-sleeved standard 88 mm x 63 mm cards. This is the default format for Magic: the Gathering and Pokemon cards.
  • Looking for the 100 CARDS VERSION? Find it HERE.

Updates

  • Chamfer update (November 5th). With v7, now the “loose” variant is the default. The chamfered lid stopper is the default and included in the v7 profile. Base and lid chamfers have been removed to avoid very tall sleeves bending.
  • Chamfered lid update (August 26th). After several feedbacks, and help by lexlix, I add a more generous space to the lid so that sleeves wouldn't get caught in it, as well as a lateral chamfer. Use the “Chamfered lid” profiles if you find yourself having this issue.
  • New lid profiles (August 7th). After many feedbacks, I created a new profile with a more loose fitting lid. That should help people that previously had trouble with too much friction. It also helps with the installation of magnets.
  • 100 cards version (August 8th). It's now available here.

Printing instructions

Choose two of your favourite brightest colours and print each part separately! This deck box comes into two variants:

  • Base variant (yellow and magenta in the sample pictures): only the top and bottom part.
  • Droplets variant (blue and green in the sample pictures): top, bottom and the droplets. The bottom part has circular inserts to slot in the droplets after printing.

Each variant comes with two fitting profiles:

  • Tight. The lid fits tightly on the base. Magnets are not needed. Depending on your filament shrinkingproperties, this fit may be too tight.
  • Loose. The lid fits loosely on the base. This fitting works best with magnets to keep the two halves in place.

I found through my tests that both provide enough grip to remain closed, either by friction or by magnetism. Pick your favourite.

Printing suggestions

  • Suggest plate. Smooth PEI (high-temperature)
  • Suggest nozzle. 0.4mm
  • Suggest layer height. 0.2 for a quick print; 0.12 to 0.16 (or adaptive) for more aesthetically pleasing circles

Assembly instructions

Originally, I envisioned this deck as a snap-fit deck using eight 8x2 mm magnets. You can see each part has hidden magnet holes to install 8x2 mm magnets. However, after printing this twice, I noticed that the friction between top and bottom parts of the case are enough to hold the content firmly in place.

Feel free to glue in the magnets for an extra strong closure, however, I don't think they are needed! Your choice of filament and the shrinkage property of your filament may anyway produce slightly looser parts. In that case, magnets will be useful.

If you are not using magnets and you print using standard Bambu Lab filaments, you may find it useful to wiggle the lid left and right to close it instead of pushing and pulling it directly along the vertical axis.

Tolerances and clearances

  • It is impossible to design for all filament types
  • My models are designed and printed using Bambu Lab printers and Bambu Lab filaments
  • If you use other filament types (different materials) or vendors (different brand), the result may differ. Before posting issues about tolerances / model tightness / loseness, please consider the filament you used for the print.
  • Even with the same filament, results may vary (different settings, humidity, ventilation, etc…)

Common print troubleshooting

  • Adhesion. Ensure you clean your print bed regularly with quality dish soap and water. Use of a releasing agent like Magigoo is advised. This advice is only applicable to PEI plates. Please consult your build plate manufacturer for detailed cleaning instructions! If you still have adhesion issues, try using a Super Tack or a BIQU cool plate; or add an extra brim to the model.
  • Material. My prints are all PLA. Use other materials at your own risk. You will likely need to tune the printing profile.
  • Temperature. Cold air and drafts can lower the quality of the print. Ensure your printer is located in an environment with stable temperature.
  • Drying. Drying PLA is not a requirement, but be aware that over-drying can cause layer detachment.
