Description

And so I present to you, an XF84H Thunderscreech. The jet was an attempt at supersonic flight with a turboprop which is like trying to win a NASCAR race in a Model T, you're not gonna do it but may as well try. Now, since the turbine that spins the blades always runs at full power, you need to pitch the blades for throttle. One small problem with running at full speed for the prop, it made 900 sonic booms a second. A pilot said “You aren't big enough and there is not enough of you to put me back in that plane”. It was so loud someone in the ground crew had a seizure, others didn't feel so good and another one was just stunned. And you could here it from 22 miles away, wonderful. And they also strapped an afterburner, so they technically cheated. The turbine was so unreliable they had to always have the ram air turbine out so if the turbine croaks the plane isn't gone. However one did crash. And because the turbine was at full throttle every second the torque caused problems. The one example remains displayed on National Museum of the United States Air Force over in Dayton, Ohio. This is also where the XB-70 is displayed.
