Collapsing Katana 天旋 (Celestial Spiral)

"Collapsing Katana - Celestial Spiral" is a 3D-printed kinetic toy sword inspired by the elegance of traditional katanas and the dynamic motion of spiraling galaxies.

Designed with a unique mechanical telescopic structure, this blade collapses and extends smoothly, offering both visual charm and interactive delight.

The gear-like guard and cosmic-inspired hilt echo the theme of celestial rotation, making it a fusion of engineering play and artistic fantasy. Ideal for collectors, creatives, and dreamers alike.

Assembly instructions:
1. Place the blades in order.

2. Press the lid firmly.

After several attempts, I finally got this printed. My problems were most likely filament related, but the tsuba does not spin freely as others have stated. It takes a while, but it does loosen up some after breaking it in. The more you spin it, pieces of filament in the gears appear. Remove those and it starts spinning better. The blade sections extend and collapse very well. Depending on how much force you use to extend the blade, the sections friction lock solidly. The tsuka feels solid, the ito and menuki are detailed, and the kashira easily snaps into place to hold the blade sections in. I used a metallic gold PLA Silk filament on a Flashforge 5M. It took about 5.5 hours to print in place. Overall, it's a good print that's fun to play with.

I'll try again when I get regular PLA or PETG. My niece wants one after she saw this one.

how did you get your blade to extend? Ive tried printing 3 now, and all 3 are stuck and I end up breaking the blade trying to get it to extend...?

to be honest it worked flawlessly the 1st time. I let it sit there for about 20 mins after it's done printing. I saw you comment for help but im just staring also, so I wouldn't be much help. hippie you figure it out.

I tried printing twice and the two smallest "blades" kept sticking together, so I just used the slicer software to print them individually one at a time and it worked. Hope that helps!

Might be one of the best swords out there. The fidget gears make this truly unique and a big crowd pleaser. Thanks!

hello. awesome design. printed the handle at 120% scale in marble. Has quite a lot of play with the gears and they can slip over the teeth and bunch up in the ring. wondered if it could be to do with scaling up? also a few artefacts on one side. not sure if to do with time lapse mode on and it always shifting off to the left on each layer. just set up my A1 yesterday and of course, a sword/katana is top priority. currently printing the blade in metallic PLA :D

The gaps between the gears are adjusted for PLA+ and PETG. Do not enlarge them, otherwise the gaps will be too large. All other details are calculated and will be distorted when enlarged. In addition, the graininess is a side effect of turning on time-lapse photography on the A1.

For the record, the blade worked alright. There's a slightly wavy texture toward the upper end of each section, but again, that's probably a scaling thing. Lesson learned.

You can ignore this, it still works. I see this even in my printout but it does not separate.
