Ever had a print fail near the end because the nearly empty filament spool is so light it starts jumping, twisting, and causing tangles? This fully customizable Spool Weight is the ultimate solution! It fits perfectly inside the core of your spool, adding just enough calculated mass to keep it stable and ensure a smooth, consistent feed right down to the last meter.

🧠 Behind the Design (For Makers & Moderators) 

This is a parametric mechanical utility designed to optimize filament spool kinematics. The OpenSCAD script algorithmically generates a stabilized cylindrical core with dynamic boolean typography integration. Depending on the user parameters, the code executes precise Z-axis transformations (translate()) to either recess (engrave) or extrude (emboss) customized labels along the top rim. The dimensions are fully variable to accommodate varying inner spool diameters from different filament manufacturers.

 

🛠️ What can you customize?

This model is fully parametric, allowing you to create the perfect weight for your specific needs using the MakerWorld customizer.

  • Fit Your Spool: Adjust the outer_diameter to match the inner core of your filament spool (e.g., JAYO, Sunlu, Prusament, etc.).
  • Fit Your Holder: Set the inner_diameter to fit snugly onto your printer's spool holder arm, like the one on the A1 Mini or any other printer.
  • Adjust the Weight: Change the height to make the weight taller (and heavier) or shorter as needed.
  • Add Custom Text: Label your weights! Add any custom_text you want, like "1kg Spool" or the filament brand.
  • Style Your Text: Choose the font, make it bold, change the font_size, and decide whether to engrave (deboss) or emboss the text. You can even position it at the top or bottom of the weight.

🖨️ Print Settings:

  • Material: PLA, PETG, or ABS/ASA.
  • Quality: 0.20mm layer height with 5% to 15% infill. (Tip: Use a higher infill percentage if you need to generate more mass/weight).
  • Supports: 100% support-free.

 

💡 Why did I make this model?

I was getting so frustrated when the spool on my A1 Mini got close to empty. It would become lightweight and start hopping around, causing feeding problems and threatening to ruin my prints. I rebuilt my initial design as a fully customizable OpenSCAD file so that anyone can engineer their own perfect dimensional solution.
