The Story Behind This Model

…is a simple one! This model, and the upcoming autumn decorations, have a straightforward origin: My wife adores gnomes. Every time she sees a charming gnome, she rejoices like a child, and I happily fulfill her every wish.

But this particular model had another impetus! I really wanted to paint again! I'm not particularly adept at painting 3D models, so I need practice! A simple model with uncomplicated shapes and surfaces, yet incorporating a few challenges—like the reverse of the sign and the nasal area—provides excellent opportunities for honing my skills.

This model is easy to print, prints relatively quickly, and is simple to paint. Even children should find it easy to paint their own gnome, however they desire!

Printing Tips for Optimal Results

I have significantly adjusted the print profile to minimize material waste and reduce supports; unfortunately, eliminating them entirely proved impossible. In my tests with Kingroon PETG, Bambu PLA Basic, and SunLu PLA matte, the results were excellent! However, for PETG, I would slightly increase the support z-distance. I have already slightly increased this for PLA to facilitate easier support removal. For PETG, I would increase the distance again to 0.3mm, or 1.5 layers. You'll find this option in Bambu Studio, Orca Slicer, etc., under: Supports/Upper Z-Distance. If the supports prove difficult to remove, simply increase this value. You will unfortunately have to determine what works best for you, as each filament behaves differently—you don't want unsightly overhangs. For me, this worked well!

Painting Tips!

…first, I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL; I have limited experience with proper painting, but I think the model turned out quite well for my second or third attempt at painting something. I printed the model's base in matte white (link below). For painting, I used acrylic brush pens purchased from Temu. However, Amazon offers a larger set with a better color selection…shame on me for having so few! The colors unfortunately lack perfect opacity if the model isn't primed; however, the pens are significantly easier to handle! I would absolutely recommend them for beginners as they allow for fine details and large areas alike, and even if the white tip gets soiled with brown, excess paint is completely removed after one or two strokes. I printed using SunLu PLA matte white, which worked perfectly for me; currently, an 11kg offer is available for €8.20/kg here: https://amzn.to/3TQDzPm Unfortunately, the colors bled a little, so I would prefer priming next time. Using a filler primer like this one: https://amzn.to/4mbQpUt should mitigate this problem and also minimize the print lines!

PRINT PROFILES

You will find my standard profile for PLA and PETG in this post, but also specialized profiles for the H2D to maximize the process! I have created a single print plate for the H2D in maximum size and a 60cm profile for outdoor use! The profiles are preset for PETG, but you can also use ASA or ABS! If you want these profiles for the handy app, please let me know, I will add them as soon as possible! Since I don't currently see the enormous need, I'll save myself the work and start on the next project instead! DEAL?
