First Grade Irregular Sight Word Blocks

Description
As a teacher and homeschool parent I am always looking for ways to make learning fun. Sight word practice is often a struggle so I created these sight word blocks to help find new ways to practice those difficult sight words with my students and kids. This set is made up of 60 irregular words meant for first grade learners that are more challenging because they are harder to sound out. With more play based practice the hope is that the words will become easier to read over time.
Suggested practice and game ideas:
- Free Play - Introduce the blocks and see how the learner interacts on their own.
- I Spy - Place a few blocks in a set game space. Player one says "I spy the word ________". Player two tries to find the word. They keep the block if they find it. Player one can also give clues to help them. “It starts with a ___.” “It rhymes with ________. ” “It ends with _____. ”
- Sorting- Try sorting the words with your learner. Example: beginning letter sounds, words that rhyme, vowel sounds, spelling patterns, etc.
- Stacking - Try playing with the blocks like the popular Jenga game. Stack the blocks in alternating rows and columns of 3. Player one removes a block, says the word, then stacks it on top. Player two removes a block, says the word, then stacks it on top.
- Story Time -
- Target Practice - Have dun setting up the blocks along the back of a couch, counter top, or other firm surface. Find a safe object to toss toward the blocks (nerf toys, snowballs, rolled up socks, etc). Once a block is knocked down and/or reset have the player try reading the word out loud.
- Sensory Play- Find your favorite sensory bin or play space and enjoy the blocks. Cover the blocks in playdough and use tools to dig them out and read them. Hide them in sand, flour, rice, dry pasta and read them aloud as you uncover them. Let them float in water and catch them with a net.
- Story Time - Choose 3+ blocks and try to make up a silly story or sentence using the words.
Hide and Seek - Choose a set number of blocks to hide in a designated play space. Give players time to find the blocks. They earn points for every block they find and bonus points for every block they read.
I hope you enjoy these blocks and ideas. Please comment if you have other games and ideas that you would use these blocks for.
Additional sets coming soon. Comment below if there are other blocks you would like to see created.
