Description
Invisible Bookshelf – Minimalist Vertical Display
The Invisible Bookshelf is vertical bookcase designed to visually disappear behind your books. Its clean, modern design uses minimal material while offering surprising strength and stability. It’s ideal for paperbacks, small hardcovers, decorative items, or compact plants.
A rigid aluminum extrusion forms the backbone, allowing the bookshelf to stand tall while maintaining a small footprint. Once filled, the books take center stage, and the support structure fades into the background.
Features:
• Includes versions for 20x20 mm and 0.75x0.75” square aluminum extrusions
• Stable base holds approximately 4 kg of sand for balance
• Optional TPU feet for non-slip support and easy leveling
• Optional spacers to adjust shelf spacing
• Clean, vertical profile with shelves that appear to float
Required Parts:
You only need to print two build plates to make a working Invisible Bookshelf:
- The base plate, which holds the aluminum pole and gets filled with sand
- The shelf plate, which contains a single shelf that slides onto the pole
Print one copy of the shelf plate for each shelf you want to include in your bookcase. The number of shelves you use is up to you and depends on the height of the extrusion and the spacing you prefer.
In addition to the printed parts, you will need:
- A square aluminum extrusion, either 20x20 mm or 0.75x0.75”, cut to a length between 1 meter and 1.8 meters, depending on how tall you want your bookshelf to be.
Important Notes:
• Do not print in PLA. Shelves will sag over time. Use PETG, ABS, or ASA.
• Not designed for large or heavy books. Best used with small and medium-sized books.
• Not recommended for homes with babies or small children.
• The central support pole will lean back slightly when empty. This corrects itself as books are added.
• A height of 1 meter is very stable. It can be extended up to 1.8 meters in the right setting.
Assembly Instructions:
1. Print the base and fill it with sand (about 4 kg). A funnel that fits the fill hole is available here: Funnel Model.

2. Choose the extrusion type that is easiest to find in your region.
• Use 0.75” aluminum extrusion if you are in the US (or 20 mm isn’t available)
• Use 20 mm aluminum extrusion if you live elsewhere
• A printable shim is included to adapt the smaller extrusion to the 20 mm printed shelves.
3. Attach the sand access cover. The cover has two small indentations that can go on the inside for a cleaner look, but you can flip the cover over for better grip if needed.
4. If desired, add optional TPU feet to the base. You can scale the feet along the Z-axis to help level the base on uneven surfaces. Use a phone’s level app to check for level.
5. Slide each printed shelf down the extrusion pole, spacing them as needed.
A Minimalist Shelf That Lets Your Books Shine
The Invisible Bookshelf is designed to highlight your collection rather than the shelf itself. Once filled, the structure nearly vanishes, making it an elegant and efficient way to organize and display your favorite items.
