Attis (or Atys) was a Phrygian hero in Greek mythology, often associated with Adonis and the Mesopotamian god Tammuz. Originally a figure from Asia Minor, his myth was later integrated into Greek tradition when the Greeks adopted the Asiatic mother goddess Cybele.
In the myth, Cybele falls deeply in love with Attis. According to one version of the story, Attis is driven to madness, castrates himself beneath a pine tree, and dies from blood loss. As a symbol of his eternal bond with nature, he is transformed into a tree.
The cult of Attis revolved around powerful themes of life, death, and rebirth. Each spring, a major festival was held in his honor, marked by mourning rituals and laments, followed by celebrations of nature's renewal—expressing hope and resurrection.
