Just push on the handle with your thumb, and outline the circle! The inner diameter should be exactly 6 inches, at which point you can cut your holes either on the inside, on the line, or outside the line, depending on what you need to insert.
Put your “X marks the spot” on the ceiling in pencil or marker or whatever, and just make sure the center reticle lines up with it. Easy!
