Description

This is a high-speed winder based on a planetary gearset, with a gear ratio of 1:3, achieving 3x winding speed. Typically, winding a 2-meter-long data cable with a conventional winder requires rotating 8-10 times, but with this device, you only need to turn it 3 times. Sounds great, but to achieve this, I had to put in a lot of effort. The first challenge was winding resistance. While using the gear ratio to increase the speed, the frictional resistance from the cable and the winder is also amplified and passed on to the user. After multiple attempts to reduce resistance, I finally adopted a design with two rollers added at the both side. This significantly reduces the frictional resistance when the cable retracts. Additionally, the 1:3 gear ratio is a well-balanced solution that has been validated multiple times. Testing shows that it can accommodate TPE hard super-fast charging data cables with a diameter of up to 5mm and a length of up to 2 meters.

In terms of design, to highlight the mechanical aesthetics of the planetary gearset, multiple openwork designs are incorporated. Every rotation reveals the gears' operation as a mechanical art form.

This winder is entirely 3D-printed and assembled without glue. To ensure a properly functioning planetary gearset speed winder, please carefully read the instructions before assembly.

I printed this planetary geared cable winder and it is truly a little mechanical marvel The 1:3 system makes winding super fast and the gear movement is fascinating to watch The print was precise and assembly was simple with no glue needed A well-thought-out and functional project perfect for anyone who loves 3D printed mechanisms

Simply scale all parts down to 85%. The smaller model still prints and assembles perfectly.

I’m truly impressed by your designs. The attention to detail—without sacrificing practicality—is outstanding. Even the assembly instructions are exemplary! This particular project is more restrained aesthetically; it’s less Byzantine and doesn’t emphasize that “tourbillon” or perhaps steampunk spirit as much. But thanks to its more compact construction, it actually feels more practical for transport. And most importantly, it scales beautifully down to 85%, making it much more convenient for smaller cables! So while it may be an older design compared to the [Polaris] Fast Planetary Gear Cable Winder, it definitely deserves boost after boost. In the photo, in the foreground, there’s the scaled-down model set against the newer model: [Polaris] Fast Planetary Gear Cable Winder.

Easy winding and infinite color possibilities! One note though: An idea for a V2 would be to make the cable insert slot cover a little wider for easier installation.

Cool model, but I can't turn it. it was a real struggle to attach the top as well. Rollers are fine, and the gears turned before I attached the top. Any ideas why? Also, the locking thing to install after the cable is very lose...

These are a great build. They snap together nicely and the little rollers are a GREAT idea! They are easy to use and just work! Well done and well engineered.

Very good, I had to scale the size from g to XL to be able to include a thicker cable, but the project is very good
