Description
Oud Haerlem Castle is a former castle whose remains are located on the east side of the North Holland town of Heemskerk, 400 meters southwest of the later Assumburg Castle. It was built in 1248 by Simon van Haerlem. In 1351, during the Hook and Cod wars, it was besieged and destroyed. It was then owned by Jan II van Polanen, who himself was not present during the siege, which lasted at least a few months. In aerial photography in the 1930s, the castle was "rediscovered".
