Japanese Andon Lamp – A Quiet Tribute to Traditional Light
The Andon (行灯) is a traditional Japanese lamp that was widely used during the Edo period (1603–1868).
With wooden frames and washi paper, it gently diffused candlelight, creating a calm and intimate atmosphere.
Today, it remains a symbol of Japanese aesthetics—quiet, minimal, and rooted in the appreciation of subtle beauty.
This 3D-printable model brings the andon into the modern world, while respecting its original form and spirit.
The included panels reflect classic seasonal and symbolic motifs of Japan.

Structure and Assembly
- 4 corner posts with V-slots
- 8 horizontal connectors
- 4 decorative panel inserts
- 4 locking caps
- 1 Light Tray
All parts snap together without glue or screws.
Panels slide smoothly into the slots and are secured with top caps.
Usage Notes
Place a battery-powered LED light or candle inside.
Do not use open flames.
Printed thin (around 0.8–1.2 mm) on a textured PEI build plate, the surface of the panels takes on a translucent texture similar to shoji or handmade washi.
This soft diffusion of light is central to the design’s character.
Ideal for quiet corners, bedrooms, entryways, or as a subtle ambient light.
Included Panel Designs
This set includes five panels:
- Mt. Fuji – A timeless and iconic Japanese landscape
- Plum Blossoms and Warbler – A traditional early spring pairing
- Zen Circle (Ensō) – A simple, contemplative brushstroke
- Blank Panel – For a minimalist presence, or to emphasize the form itself
Each panel responds differently to light, allowing for quiet shifts in mood and tone.
