Biohazard Smart Container

This innovative Biohazard Smart Container is designed to enhance the safety and security of sharp waste disposal, particularly in medical and laboratory settings. The project was conceived with the goal of providing a robust solution for the proper containment and disposal of hazardous sharps, preventing accidental injuries.

Key Features

The container incorporates two primary safety mechanisms: a gravity-activated Smart Lid and a manual locking slider for permanent closure.

The Smart Lid

The Smart Lid is an ingeniously designed, print-in-place mechanism that operates based on gravity.

  • Open Position: When the container is in an upright position, gravity causes the lid to open, allowing for easy and safe insertion of sharps and other biohazardous materials.
  • Closed Position: If the container is inverted or tilted upside down, the Smart Lid automatically closes, securing the contents within and preventing spillage or accidental exposure. This feature is crucial for maintaining containment during handling and transport.

Manual Locking Slider

For secure disposal, the lid is equipped with a manual locking slider. Once the container reaches its capacity, or when it's ready for disposal, this slider can be engaged to permanently lock the lid. This action ensures that the contents remain safely contained throughout the disposal process, from collection to incineration or other appropriate methods.

Assembly and Usability

The Biohazard Smart Container is designed for ease of assembly and immediate use.

  • Initial Setup: Upon removal from the build plate, the only required steps are to loosen the Smart Lid and the sliding lock. The lid is then placed onto the container and gently pressed until it audibly snaps into place, indicating a secure fit.
  • User-Friendly: This straightforward assembly process ensures that the container can be quickly deployed in any environment where sharps disposal is necessary.

Printed in place, no supports. Bambu Studio complained that I had no supports but i still went ahead with the print without supports, and it turned out fantastic! Thanks for this simple yet effective model!

Nice and sturdy design 🧡 The lid didn’t quite fit or click in place for me, but nothing falls out, so it still does the job safely!

The over all design is great but it has a big flaw ... lets split this into parts: the Bin is really well done and came out great, it has the right sizing for storing my diabetic pump needles. The bin lid on the other hand .. while it fit's and get's secured really well to the bin it self, the small entry lid get's too saggy and it's closing mechanism/button doesn't work at all. Like someone already mentioned in other comment, the latching mechanism is too tolerant and can only hold it i keep on pressing the button from the inside.. which defeats the purpose of the locking mechanism and maybe the entire print. If you try to slide open or close it and you do a little extra force, even by mistake (it doesnt need much), the button will just falls into the box. Would be great if the maker could do an optional Lid that would open upwards. instead of falling like this one.

What do you mean? Mine was really secure and I printed it multiple times with pla.

Replying to @MarinUs :
yours doesn’t hang loosely? because I tried both pla and petg, and the lid sags because the latching mechanism is too tolerant, which for a sharps box is not secure.

I like the design and the idea. Question: how do you keep the lid closed? Its always open. How do you close it to lock once its on the box? There's no way to pull it up and lock it.
