Prototype Overview
The J-10CY fighter jet, the new aircraft adopted by the Air Force August 1st Flight Demonstration Team in 2023, is a modified version of the active J-10C fighter jet, retaining its full combat capabilities. Its most striking feature is the significantly heightened dorsal spine extending from the cockpit to the vertical stabilizer, enhancing directional stability for intricate formation aerobatics and potentially accommodating increased smoke generation capacity. Employing a DSI inlet design, it exhibits a marked improvement in subsonic maneuverability compared to its predecessor, the J-10AY, resulting in more spectacular aerial maneuvers. It retains the Russian-made AL-31FN engine for logistical consistency. Eleven hardpoints allow carriage of weapon systems such as the PL-15 missile, ensuring beyond-visual-range strike capabilities equivalent to its operational counterpart. The J-10CY modification underscores the maturity of China's aerospace industry in the realm of multirole combat aircraft, and its technological approach may serve as a benchmark for future J-10 series upgrades.
