5" Lathe Sanding Plate – 1" × 8 TPI

Turn your wood-lathe into a slow-speed, high-torque sander that re-uses those “spent” ROS discs.

🪄 Sculpt-Sanding Bliss (30 seconds):

(also just a great slow-speed, high-torque shop sander)

🚀 Key Features

  • Fits any 1" × 8 TPI spindle – threads print clean with a 0.4 mm nozzle.
  • Fits – 5-inch (125 mm) discs.
  • Foam-pad – Install a ½" hook & loop interface pad for contour sanding bliss.
  • Re-use dull ROS discs – slow speed + high torque = extra life from 5" sanding discs that have become inefficient on the Random Orbit Sander.
  • Eight accessory holes – 4 × ¼" and 4 × “Kreg” size for future contour plates or jigs.

🖨 Recommended Print Settings (Bambu P1S/A1 tested)

TL;DR:  Don't sweat it.

  • Bambu PETG-HF filament & filament profile defaults
  • Bambu 0.20mm Standard print defaults, plus:

    • 4 walls
    • Archane
    • Gyroid 20%

ParameterValueNotes
MaterialPETG or ABSPETG = easy & durable; ABS/ASA = extra heat resistance.  But unnecessary using a foam interface pad.
Nozzle0.4 mmCurrently, 0.4mm w/ the below settings requires zero thread cleanup.
Layer Height0.16-0.20 mmI've been using 0.20mm.
Walls4, Arachne4 = Important for screw holes
Arachne = cleaner text
Infill30 % GyroidReally 20% and above.
SupportsOFFBecause supports are annoying.
Build Plate AdhesionSkirt/Brim optionalI've been printing dozens of these - no skirt/brim - on Textured PEI with no issues.
CoolingDefault Bambu PETG-HF settings

Bonus:  I enabled ironing on the text objects so the text appears cleaner.

*Preset .3mf files include these settings – just open & “Send to Printer.”

🛒 What to Buy

  1. 5" Adhesive-backed loop pad – Center & stick on hard.  (I buy 6" wide rolls, stick them on, then cut to size.)
  2. (optional) 5" Hook & Loop Interface Pad  – ½" thick.  For sanding silky smooth contours.

🪚 Usage Tips

  • RPM SLOW.  SLOW & Torquey is the magic here.  Slow keeps hooks cool & prevents burn marks on end-grain.
  • Push moderately when sanding.  The lathe’s torque lets you shape workpieces fast.
  • Heat kills Velcro. Clear dust often and back off if discs feel hot.  Search YouTube “stop melting your hooks” for more info on this.
  • Rig up a dust hood and/or wear a dust mask. This can generate a lot of sanding dust real quick!
