Phagocytic cell Macrophage
Print Profile(1)

Description
Macrophages (abbr. ΜΦ; from Ancient Greek μακρός makrós, German ‚large‘ and Ancient Greek φαγεῖν phagein, German ‚to eat‘, "giant phagocytic cell")[1] are among the phagocytic cells (phagocytes) and are leukocytes (white blood cells), thus belong to the cells of the immune system. They serve to eliminate microorganisms through phagocytosis and represent phylogenetically (phylogenetically) the presumably oldest parts of the innate immune defense. Thus, macrophage-like cells in the fruit fly Drosophila and even in plants have been identified.[2]
