Description

Fully functional Liebig condenser, with delivery tube and cold water access points.

 

Obviously it shouldn't be used to actually carry out distillation / reflux since it's highly likely the material would melt, but it's a good concept. Maybe high temperature plastics could be used to provide functionality.

PLA melts at 180 C while water steam exists at 100 C, so I think you could make distilled water using this! I think it would look neat to use a heat-color-changing filament to see it warm up. I have a question, though: would it be an improvement to have the inner tube be a spiral or have a tree-like pattern? That way, the surface area of the tube would greatly increased, allowing for greater heat transfer efficiency and the overall device to be shortened!

This is a great idea. Although I don't trust PLA since it's hydrolysable. While it will break down into lactic acid (non-toxic), the dye may still pass through into the delivery container. In regards to the heat efficiency, a spiralled / pattered tube will increase the heat transfer rate (at nearly the same rate as decreasing the thickness of the inner tube), as according to the general heat transfer equation. In addition to this, adding some type of rough surface will increase the turbulence in the delivery tube, allowing for better heat transfer. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely add this for the V2. I'm also thinking about using translucent filament so you can see the flow of water.

plastic leeches toxins into liquid when heated, it would definitely not be a good idea to use plastic on an actual still.

probably wouldn't be that bad if you used transparent petg obviously not ideal but for anything below the boiling point of water it would serve as a crude example; such as distilling alcohol not for consumption but instead for sanitizing surfaces (particularly because of how difficult it was to get isopropyl during covid)
