Sir Daniel Fortesque’s Skull (MediEvil)
1. Shape and Design
- Overall Aesthetic:
The skull is stylized and exaggerated, capturing the cartoonish horror-comedy essence of MediEvil. It features dramatic asymmetry, particularly with one oversized eye socket that houses a spherical eyeball, giving the character a memorable, goofy look. - Cranial Form:
The dome of the skull is rounded and smooth with subtle surface curvature. The forehead slopes downward into deep-set sockets, emphasizing a furrowed, expressive brow line. - Eye Area:
- Left socket: Deeply recessed and empty, shadowed to enhance the skeletal appearance.
- Right socket: Filled with a printed eyeball that protrudes forward. The eyeball is spherical, detailed with concentric layer rings, and firmly attached.
- Jaw and Teeth:
A row of large, rounded, stubby teeth extends from the upper jaw. These teeth are cartoony and unevenly spaced, pointing slightly forward and down, giving the skull a toothy grin. - Cheekbones & Structure:
Pronounced zygomatic arches (cheekbones) curve outward, enhancing the character's iconic grimace.
2. Printing Considerations
- Print Orientation:
The skull is printed upright, with the teeth facing downward toward the build plate. This orientation:- Ensures stability during printing
- Prevents support artifacts on the top/front of the skull
- Maintains good detail fidelity in the eye sockets and teeth
- Support Requirements:
- Needed under the chin and teeth
- Possibly under the eyeball depending on slicer settings
- Supports should be minimal but easy to remove with a good overhang threshold
- Layer Lines:
Prominent, especially on the curved surfaces of the dome and sockets. The layer rings are clearly visible due to the smooth surfaces and the light-colored filament, creating an almost topographic effect. - Material:
Printed in white PLA, which enhances detail visibility but also emphasizes layer lines. The matte finish complements the stylized texture. - Resolution:
Recommended layer height: 0.12 mm or finer
This helps retain detail in the teeth and the spherical eye without making the layer rings too dominant. - Adhesion:
The large bottom surface (teeth and jaw) provides solid bed adhesion, reducing the risk of warping.
3. Summary
This print of Sir Daniel’s skull is a standalone showpiece, both charming and creepy. It balances stylized design with print-friendly geometry. With careful orientation and minimal supports, the model prints cleanly and becomes a highly recognizable item for MediEvil fans.
