Winding Machine 2.0 is out — fully upgraded

 

Axes upgrade: From 2-axis to 3-axis for finer path control and higher winding precision.


Drive upgrade: Switched from stepper to encoder motor, solving long-run overheating while cutting power consumption and boosting torque and speed.


New mode: In addition to wire break detection and wind by turns, now supports wind by length.


Electronics: Faster MCU with a custom PCB. No soldering—plug-and-play assembly.


Remote updates: OTA firmware upgrade supported—no more flashing headaches.


Same footprint, larger travel: Overall size unchanged, but effective travel is increased.

2025.6.7 Upgrades

 

3D Model Upgrades

  1. Add fan-base model
    – Provides a mounting point for an external fan to add active cooling.
  2. New panel interface 2.0
    – Redesigned to fit a more common USB-A female port.
  3. Reinforced slider model
    – Strengthened the shaft–hole region for greater durability.
  4. Refined linear-rail model
    – Added extra clearance around the stepper motor for heat dissipation, and corrected the mounting-hole dimensions for easier installation.
  5. Expanded base model
    – Reserved more internal space to simplify cable routing.
  6. Upgraded main filament-spool axle
    – Redesigned so the rotating spindle no longer rubs against the swing arm.
  7. Improved four swing arms
    – Increased the cooling gap around the stepper motor and adjusted the minimum swing angle so that, at its lowest position, the filament never contacts the base.

All of these upgraded models remain fully compatible with the previous parts—these are pure design optimizations. We especially recommend installing items 6 and 7 (located in plate 2 and plate 3).

Hardware & Software Upgrades

  1. Added fan cooling to improve driver-board thermal stability.
  2. X-axis motor drive switched to quarter-step mode, significantly reducing noise.
  3. Turn-count now reports the Y-axis rotations after gearing, rather than raw stepper steps.
  4. Fixed display-screen bugs for smoother operation.
  5. Unified module-test code: every button press now produces a double-flash solely to verify functionality, regardless of where it’s connected.

Note (v1.1): The new Arduino firmware drives the X-axis in quarter-step mode and is incompatible with the previous wiring. To upgrade to v1.1, you must add a single jumper wire on the driver PCB—this is required to achieve the intended noise reduction.
