The Rafale (Dassault Rafale) is a twin-engine, delta-wing, highly agile, multirole fourth-generation-plus fighter jet manufactured by Dassault Aviation of France. [18]
In June 1982, Dassault Aviation announced that it was developing a successor to the Mirage 2000. On April 13, 1983, the French military awarded Dassault a contract for two technology demonstration aircraft. By the end of 1985, France showcased the Rafale A technology demonstrator prototype. On July 4, 1986, the Rafale experimental aircraft made its maiden flight. The Rafale C 01 aircraft made its first flight in May 1991; the Rafale M 01 aircraft in December 1991; and the Rafale B 01 aircraft in April 1993. [18] Deliveries of the Rafale-M carrier-borne fighter to the French Navy's aviation force began in 1998. [30] It entered service on December 4, 2000. [21] Deliveries of the Rafale-C (single-seat) and Rafale-B (two-seat) fighters to the French Air Force began in 2002. [30] The Rafale fighter jet is 15.27 meters long, has a wingspan of 10.9 meters, a maximum flight speed of Mach 1.8, a service ceiling of 16,800 meters, and a range of 3,700 kilometers. [5]
The Rafale fighter jet is the first aircraft to have an inherent electronic defense system (spectral integrated electronic warfare system). [18] This aircraft has extremely powerful air-to-air, air-to-ground, and air-to-sea attack capabilities. It can also serve as an aircraft carrier-borne aircraft, and can even drop nuclear bombs (F3 type). It is lauded as the most versatile multirole fighter in the world at the time.
