Vatican City is an independent state in the middle of Rome, Italy. At only about 0.44 km², it is the smallest state in the world – both in terms of area and population. The Vatican is the center of the Roman Catholic Church and the official seat of the Pope. It was founded in 1929 by the Lateran Treaties between the Holy See and Italy. Important buildings include St. Peter's Basilica, St. Peter's Square, and the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel. The official language is Latin, the everyday language is mostly Italian.
