Description

Hummingbirds are excellent pollinators and do a great job at pest control, making them great to have around your yard or garden. Plus, they're just really cool birds. Hummingbird feeders provide a great way to attract them to your yard or garden. They can also be pretty curious and once they're used to you being around, they'll fly right up to you and hover in front of you. Especially if you're wearing a red shirt! They are pretty territorial and will guard their feeders.

 

Please take proper care of your feeders, the nectar and feeder need to be cleaned regularly. I designed this model to have a top that can be removed so that the inside of the feeder can easily be cleaned. You should be cleaning the feeder and changing the nectar every few days.

 

You will need to make sugar water if you want the hummingbirds to keep coming back to the feeder. I use 1 part sugar, 4 parts water. Mix the sugar and water in a cup and then pour it into a plastic bottle.

 

Most single thread start bottles should work with this feeder. Coca-Cola, SmartWater, and Aquafina bottles have been tested. Please clean the bottle before using. Using a red filament is highly recommended as hummingbirds are more attracted to that color. I have tested and iterated on this model extensively to prevent leaking. This feeder has a basin at the bottom to hold the sugar water and does not leak in high winds (we had 30+ mph gusts here the other day). It is a gravity feeder, so only a small amount of sugar water is held in the basin.

 

Assembly

1. Pass one of the string through one of the loops. I used twine and kept one end connected to the spool until the last step so that the length was correct.

2. Wrap the end around the top holder. This will help keep the holder from slipping.

3. Wrap the end around the other hole in the holder.

4. Tie the end off. I use a box knot, but a slip knot will work as well.

5. Use a bottle to determine how much string you'll need.

6. Cut the end and tie off.
