Here is part two in my “Organic Lamp” kit series - the majestic Barrel Cactus.
I know that at this point I usually tell you a fun little origin story about how my son helped me come up with the design. I hate to disappoint - but this one is actually for my wife.
One of our favorite places on earth is Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California. Something about the near alien landscape and plant life is just so alluring. While an actual Joshua Tree or Cholla (what the park is known for) would be very difficult to sculpt into a lamp, the simple barrel cactus is particularly suited for this case.
Anyway - when my wife came into my print garden and saw it this morning she freaked out. (Anything we can do to justify our habit… err i mean hobby to our spouses, right?)
The model in the photos are printed in Bambu PETG Translucent in Olive Green, but it prints well in both transparent PLA as well as basic white PLA. Obviously white PLA isn't green, but if you have a color changing LED you can get that same green glow.
It prints with VERY minimal supports for the main body, but there are obviously supports for the cutout for the LED 001 puck. I find that the easiest way to remove them is to insert a flat head screwdriver and gently pry it out. Be careful, though. By the nature of designing things meant to diffuse as much light as possible, the walls are thin - so be gentle when using tools.
