After appreciating the Bambulab spool's sophisticated design, I resolved to utilize it consistently.

Initially, I 3D printed a filament rewinder; I recommend the project by Storm Disign here.

Subsequently, I located and printed several spool core variations; I recommend the project by @InfiltratorN7.

Naturally, I also required proper filament labels and an RFID tag holder.

The notion of cloning existing tags and inscribing them onto FUID stickers also captivated me.

My initial tags were printed using Shaztech.info's design here. While functional, the holders frequently dislodged from their mounts, a frustrating flaw.

Seeking alternatives, I discovered Willi 3D's SpoolCore here and Mark G's Universal RFID Spool Adapter for AMS here. Both projects seemed viable, yet neither entirely suited my needs. I had two objections: the silica gel reservoir was unnecessary, and I disliked the threaded joints. This prompted me to observe the ingenious connection method of the Bambulab spool halves—a simple yet secure, threadless bayonet mount.

I searched for 3D models of bayonet-mount RFID holders, unsuccessfully, leading me to design my own, drawing inspiration from other projects.

The outcome is quite satisfactory, and I am pleased with its functionality.

During ABS printing of the tag holder, I observed shrinkage along the height; consequently, the final layer features Z-axis enlargements of 0.15 mm.

Advantages of my holder:

  1. Tags are affixed to both spool sides, eliminating any guesswork regarding AMS filament slot orientation. The AMS RFID reader accesses different slots from opposing sides.
  2. The robust construction ensures resilience against accidental damage, especially when printed with a rigid plastic.
  3. The secure and convenient bayonet mount prevents accidental detachment.
  4. The slim tag design adds only 1.8 mm to each side of the spool.
  5. Suitable for holding 18mm diameter FUID tags purchased from AliExpress here.
