Description

I had a major leak on my 01 forester's automatic transmission. Subaru used the same 4eat transmission from around 1990 to approx 2002-2005 but im unsure exactly when they stopped using the 4eat and switched to a 5 speed auto. I had a major leak coming from my torque converter seal so i made a seal driver that fits around the shaft coming out of the transmission, its VERY important you dont pull on the shaft or else the clutch packs inside the auto trans will fall down and you may need to pay a professional for a full disassembly and reassembly to reinsert the shaft, so i made this seal driver to easily install a new seal.

I was able to push the seal in 90% of the way using this tool and nothing else, but gave it a little wack on the back with a hammer just in case. Dont forget to stake the seal in place. I also happen to notice at that point that this tool makes a clever dust cover and protector for the shaft if you have a transmission in storage. Also the end of the seal driver has a small hole for airflow and each pocket is cut about 10MM deeper than required. The diameters are very close and one of them fits very tight when its nearly all the way on, I also found this tool will fit inside the seal location in case you are storing a transmission missing the input shaft seal.

If you wanted to know the 4EAT was used on Subaru models that were naturally aspirated up until 2010. Turbo models used the 5EAT.

i didn't print this but just an FYI the 4EAT was phased out around 2013ish depending on model. SH foresters still had the 4EAT option through 2012 and then they went to a CVT or manual depending on model for 2013 forward. Imprezas i believe followed the same timeline as the SH forester was the last impreza platform forester and could share many parts with the 2010 era STI.
