Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church and the first from the American continent. Elected on March 13, 2013, he chose the name Francis, inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi, a symbol of humility, poverty, and love for nature and the vulnerable.
