Description

Gear up your Faketec with the FakeDeck XL — a rugged, offroad-style case inspired by classic walkie-talkies. Designed to house your Faketec board, this 3D-printed enclosure features a 2.42" I2C OLED screen window, dual buzzers for loud audio feedback, and a durable body that’s ready for the wild.

This is the XL version of: https://makerworld.com/en/models/912944-fakedeck-a-standalone-meshtastic-device-faketec#profileId-874124

Parts list:

  • Faketec: Any version, (i used V2-V3-V4) https://github.com/gargomoma/fakeTec_pcb.git
  • Oled SSD1309 2.42 I2C (Look at the photos)
  • Keyboard CardKB Mini Keyboard M5 stack (About 12€ in Aliexpress)
  • One or two 18650 batteries.
  • Switch waterproor MTS-203 or similar. Model can be different.
  • 4x M3 16mm screws. Also other sizes are valid because the hole is long
  • (VERSION TYPE-N) Type N connector with 5cm cable: Other lengths are ok, but is perfect for 5cm (2 inch)
  • (VERSION SMA) SMA connector. Cable size  should be 8cm or bigger.
  • Optional
    • For Sound: Two buzzers + one transistor (2N2222 for example) + 1k resistor + 10k resistor
    • Vibrator or GPS. There is space for more…

Configuration:

  • I used buzzer in pin 24 (Configure “Device” and module “External notification”
  • For screen change oled type in “Screen” to SSD1306. Is SSD1309 but in OLED_AUTO works bad…
  • Enable “Canned” module to use the keyboard as keyboard

Antenna:

  • For Type-N version: I only recommend the original ALPHA 868, the Aliexpress version is only similar from outside. The internals are only a wire with lot of hot glue… For 10 bucks is a scam. Original alpha has a big copper cilinder and j- curved live wire.
  • For SMA version: I recommend several antennas from Aliexpress. One example that works fine more than 100km is Gizont 16cm (There are similar Gizonts, 20cm is also good but worst in my tests, 40cm is bad)

Photos of the exact components that i have:´

  • Switch:

  • Buzzer (12mm ones!):

  • Connector for Type N:
  • Keyboard:

  • Screen: Must be exactly this! Look at pins in top and left corner and the rounded corners!

  • Antennas for each version:

I adore the design, I currently have a simple node I made myself on a faketec v4, without a screen, only with a battery, and I use it with my mobile phone I am still a beginner in electronics and I do not understand how some of the connections in this model are made Could you help me to make it? Or perhaps send me a diagram for the correct installation?

Yes, no problem. This afternoon I will begin designing the SMA version and creating a complete and straightforward diagram of the internal wiring. I will let you know when it is ready

Many thanks for your efforts, I'm going to prepare a shopping list to order the missing parts :) In the future, if you revise the diagram, I would love to add a GPS module if possible, I've tried searching online but I can't find anywhere which pins to solder the various points to

Hello! I really like your project! Will it be possible to work with an SPI epaper screen? Because it would be very interesting with nrf52! 2.9 inch https://github.com/WeActStudio/WeActStudio.EpaperModule?tab=readme-ov-file I just found this on AliExpress: €28.77 | WeAct 2.9 '' 2.13" 2.9 2.13 Inch Epaper Module E-paper E-Ink EInk Display Screen SPI Black-White Black-White-Red https://a.aliexpress.com/_mr5jMZ3

Hello, I just happen to have version 2.13 and another square-style one whose name I don't remember I tried to make them work but I couldn't make a working firmware nor figure out how to connect it If you take care of making the firmware I'll try to make the case for it ;) I don't know if the 2.9 version fits in the case Do you want me to try first with another one of the versions I have

Hello, good evening! Yes, see if you can put the 2.9 because from 2.4 to 2.9 the difference shouldn't be much. Otherwise, check if you have another one! Then I need to see if there's a way to get the firmware working! It might not exist for SPI

Great idea! I hadn't thought of that. Could you please give me a link to where I should post it to give it more visibility?

is there a way to make this work with a heltec t114 or t096?

Yes, of course. But you will need to connect the big screen to i2c. There is enought space but you will need to cut plastic to fit it or add a substract cube on bambustudio to remove material inside, but can be possible. Try it! Please send photos of the process and ask whatever you want

how much does this total setup cost to buy (each part)?

That depends, if you already have the PLA, it's no more than €3. The screen costs €12, the antenna €12, the buzzers €1, the M5Stack KB €12, the Faketec €10, the type N connector another €3. But you have a gadget with an infinite battery. Oh! And the battery is another €4. The switch is another euro.
