An actual conversation with my son a few nights ago:
“Daddy, can you 3d print me a night light to keep away the monsters?”
Yeah, Buddy. I would be happy to. What should the lamp look like?
“It should look like FIRE. Did you know that monsters are afraid of fire???”
Sure thing, buddy. Lets do it
I have been wanting to try my hand at creating light fixtures for a while. After all, the Prisma Petal lamp from Modular Mapping is one of the things that convinced my wife to let me buy these printers in the first place, but I am not much of a hard surface modeler so I haven't really been able to produce something that I liked just yet.
When my son asked for a nightlight the other night, it just clicked on me that I could take inspiration from the same organic design shapes that I use in my skulls, print them in translucent PETG with minimal infill, and stick an LED001 kit in the bottom and it might just work.
And it did work. So much better than I thought that it would.
My first go around involved taking one of the horns that I have cached in my skull library just to test the concept (see pictured below) thinking that the orange translucent PETG would give it a fire like effect. The result was cool, but not up to the monster repelling task needed by my boy…

So. Back to Blender. A few hours and a lot of reference images later I got what we are now calling the "Monster Repeller Lamp"
I know that this is a significant departure from what you are used to seeing from me, and I have no idea if it will be a hit or not, but you never know until you try.
Regardless, my design partner and I have been having an incredible time creating for all of you. As of today we are at 2100 followers with tens of thousands of downloads! Wow!
Please let me know what you think of this concept (Organic shapes molded around translucent filament) - I would love to do more.
Prints in around 3 hours in Bambu PETG Translucent with minimal supports.
Thank you.

PS - If you want a little bit of a behind the scenes look at my process, as well as the models that I am working on - I just created an instagram HERE - I would love to hear from you over there.
