Magnetic Holdfast for Laser Cutter
Print Profile(1)

Description
Here is a magnetic holdfast for a laser cutter. It is designed to stick magnetically to a honeycomb or metal bottom of a laser; however, it could in theory be used on any surface for any purpose. It will hold the material, if assembled as shown, 3mm off of the surface providing additional airflow to help prevent char and smoke marks that you can get even with a honeycomb.
What makes this one unique is that it is both adaptable for a wide range of material thicknesses, but both the foot and the hold rotate independent of one another. This allows you to put the foot under the material in one direction and clamp in another if needed.
I have provided both left and righthand turn threads in addition to supplying a separate foot configuration to allow for different sized magnets to be used if you do not have the required 8mmx2mm magnets. The modified foot should accept a range of magnets that are 2mm thick.

Added Notes:
When assembling the foot, you'll press fit the magnet into the top of the foot, then provide a little CA to the top of the magnets as well as lightly on the face. You'll then add the foot bottom, which should slide right on. You will need to apply some tension to the foot while it dries. I prefer to use spring clamps.
Alternatively to this, you can spray the foot bottom with activator spray before applying it to the bottom, and it will activate the CA upon the two sides touching, which means you'll just need to squeeze it a little bit until the glue completely sets. Make sure the rotating screw cap is placed into the top of the foot before pressing the two together. Once the three piece foot is together and the glue is setting, rotate the screw cap while it is in place to ensure that it doesn't set solid (though that wouldn't be the end of the world). The screw should press fit into both the cap and the knurled knob with a firm push. No glue should be needed in either case (and you really should not use glue on the bottom, as over tightening will just pop the foot off instead of breaking the assembly).
