Description

This is an add-on activated carbon air filter for the H2D/H2S/H2C. The built in filter is great but unfortunately it is bypassed when printing PLA, PETG, TPU and other materials that dont require chamber heating as shown in diagram 1. Although ABS, ASA and nylon are more toxic, PLA and PETG still release a high amount of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into the air and will benefit greatly from air filtration. The add-on filter sits in the empty space on top of the OEM filter and scrubs the air during low temperature filament printing, ensuring there is never unfiltered air exiting the chamber. With this dual filter setup you add more filtering capacity by adding more carbon to the filtration system, and splitting the air filtering work across two filters.

This is inspired by the awesome filter by “H.”, its got solid construction does not flex due to thin walls, big thanks to “H.”. I added a honeycomb internal structure just like the OEM filter, the carbon pellets are segregated into their own separate chambers. This allows for better filtration by increasing the carbon surface area without restricting the airflow. If the airflow is too restricted it can lead to high chamber temperatures and heat creep which leads to hot end and extruder clogs, so good airflow is paramount. This filter will not restrict the airflow, this type of honeycomb design is used in the majority of commercial carbon filters including the OEM H2 filter.

This item should ideally be printed from high temperature material like ABS, ASA or Nylon, although PETG should also work, I printed mine from ABS-GF. Make sure to use steam activated carbon, if you use acid-washed carbon it will cause rust inside the printer. “Aquapapa” on Amazon sells steam activated carbon, or search for Nevermore brand. This was designed for carbon pellets but if you have carbon granules you can use the 3rd profile with carbon foam to prevent it spilling out.

Also I highly recommend running this affordable ($35) IKEA Uppatvind air purifier with carbon filter conversion for best air quality in your printer room, click here for the model.
