Bring biology to light with this symbolic and scientifically grounded Tree of Life Lamp sculpture. A true-to-scale DNA double helix forms the trunk, complete with accurately proportioned cross-linking base pairs that reflect the molecular structure of real DNA. The helix rises from flowing roots and branches out into an organic canopy, illustrating all living organisms' evolutionary relationships and shared ancestry of all living organisms.

This model fully integrates with all components of the MH001 Lamp Kit from Makers Supply, turning your print into a functional, inspiring piece of illuminated science art.

Whether you're an artist, scientist, educator, student, or simply a curious mind, this piece is both a stunning display and a celebration of the genetic code that connects all life on Earth.

I recommend printing with a translucent or light-diffusing filament to allow the branches to glow and the helix to shine. But I've also designed an option that allows opaque filaments to be used with the lamp kit.

Amazingly, the DNA crosslinks print quite well without any supports; I had a couple of errant strands, which we easily tidied up. The photographed print used no supports at all. The underside of the branches shows a bit of rough texture, but it's not out of line with what you might expect from tree bark.

Printing Notes:

The provided print profile includes separate plates with different build options:

  • If printing with Translucent filaments, then choose a Translucent build (the light shines through the lens).
  • If printing with a Opaque filaments, then choose an Opaque build plate (the area above the light is open).
  • I've provided manual tree supports on the tree branches only. You can choose to leave enabled or disable supports as you wish.
  • Leaves are optional and on separate plate. The have brims because I printed in PETG. Might be okay with good bed adhesion and PLA

I used translucent PETG filaments for the pictured model, linked below:

Assembly Instructions:

  1. Double sided tape provided with the MH001 Lamp Kit can be used to secure the light to the base (see photo). Or can be omitted.
  2. The two screws provided with the MH001 Lamp Kit are used to secure the base to the main tree structure.
  3. The leaves (optional) are designed to be a push-fit onto the branches without glue.

Scientifically accurate. Symbolically rich. Beautifully illuminated.
