The Type 052D destroyer (also known as the Luyang III-class destroyer) is a guided-missile destroyer in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy. It's the latest improved variant of the Type 052C destroyer and is a modernized air defense destroyer equipped with phased array radar and a vertical launch system for area air defense missiles.
The Type 052D destroyer is the sixth type of warship to be equipped with a four-sided active phased array radar and a universal vertical launch system, after the German Sachsen-class frigate, the Dutch Seven Provinces-class frigate, the Danish Iver Huitfeldt-class frigate, the Japanese Akizuki-class destroyer, and the Hyuga-class helicopter destroyer. This marks China's entry into the ranks of the world's most advanced air defense ships. With an increasing number of Type 052Ds under construction, China has become the country with the largest number of this type of ship.
The lead ship of the Type 052D destroyer class, Kunming, was launched on August 28, 2012, and officially entered service with the People's Liberation Army Navy on March 21, 2014.
On December 18, 2018, which coincided with the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up, the 16th Type 052D destroyer was launched, which is also the third elongated version.
