Description

NOTE: If you like this, please let me know. And if you want more, let me know which family crest you would like me to work on next!

For fans of the Keepers of the Lost Cities series by Shannon Messenger, here is a re-creation of the Song Family Crest Pin. I tried to be as faithful to the official illustration by Laura Hollingsworth as possible:

IMPORTANT NOTE: This model is intended to be printed with a 0.2mm nozzle at 0.12mm layer height and height range modifiers to reduce the layer height to 0.06mm at the top to enhance detail. This is to properly capture the intricate details of the crest. If you want to print this with a 0.4mm nozzle, you may want to scale it larger and adjust your layer heights and layer height modifiers or you may end up losing too much detail. YMMV.

You have two options to print this in multicolor. I have included profiles for each method:

  1. A standard multi-color print.
    1. Starting around 4.06mm height, there are three colors, so there is purging even on a dual nozzle printer like the H2D
    2. For vertical detail, I've reduced the layer height to 0.06mm starting at the 3mm layer, so there is a lot of color changes (and resulting purges)
  2. Multi-part Model (Recommended)
    1. I've custom designed the model to be printed in multiple parts. No color changes so no waste during filament swaps.
    2. Three colors are required and I've separated them into separate plates for easy printing.
    3. All models have a modifier to reduce the layer height starting at the surface detail layer.
    4. Assembly is easy with just a few dabs of glue
    5. The flame is extremely small and bed adhesion is likely to be challenging. I've added a brim, but if you have good bed adhesion, you can disable it before printing.

If you resize the model, please carefully re-check the layer at the layer height changes. They should start at the top surface details.

You can use it as a pin by sticking a brooch pinback to the back of the model.

I made this for my daughter's birthday. She is a huge Keefe fan and loved it.

It's so awesome to hear your daughter loved it! Thanks for sharing the photo of the print! Did you print with a 0.2mm nozzle or 0.4mm? Turned out great!

Woah! What color filament did you print with? The silver? Looks really good! Acrylic markers work well? That's PLA?

Printed with a 0.4 mm nozzle @ “0.08mm High Quality” Great design with a lot of attention paid to the minute details (fingers on the hands for example) which can still be seen using a nozzle larger than specified in the profile. Colours: BBL PLA Basic Silver BBL PLA Basic Gold BBL PLA Basic Bambu Green Pictures don’t do it justice. The “macro lens” on my iPhone 13Pro accentuated the layer lines more than can been seen with the naked eye.

Wow! You're right. Looks fantastic even printed with a 0.4mm nozzle! I'm so excited to see someone else printing this model! Thank you so much for sharing! I'm taking suggestions to see which family crest I should work on next. What do you say?

This one was for a birthday present for my daughters friend. She asked me to add a pin backing before she gives it to him. My daughter asked if you can please do the Redek (?) crest.

Nice! Redek? Noted,,, The feathers on that one makes it a challenging one. Looks like I've got a lot to work on in the coming months.

Yes.. I do intend to. But these are very intricate models with very little reference material. They are challenging to design and take a lot of time. Plus, there appears to be very little downloads/interest in the two models I have uploaded so far, so the priority will necessarily be a bit lower due to the lack of motivation.. Still, my daughter likes KOTLC, so I have some motivation to eventually get through them.

Thank you! Please print and provide any feedback or comments. I don't know the exact algorithm for getting boost tokens, but the more active you are with printing, commenting, and rating models on Makerworld, the higher chances you have if receiving tokens.

I do intend to! But I just need to find the time. And I focus most of my attention and time to make models that benefit the most people. Right now, other models net me more downloads, subscribers, 5-star ratings, etc. KOTLC stuff was really a side project for me, but I do intend to return to it when I get motivation or see demand.

I really love kotlc and I am so happy that you are making kotlc things! there are not enough kotlc 3d printer models on Bambu lab. I have not printed this, but I would like to! Could you maybe make the Ruewen (probs spelled wrong) crest?
