The USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is the lead ship of the United States Navy's Zumwalt-class destroyers, named after Admiral Elmo Zumwalt.
The Zumwalt-class destroyer is the US Navy's new generation of multi-purpose, land-attack Aegis ships. From hull design, electric propulsion, command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR), network communications, detection and navigation, to weapons systems, it is a culmination of cutting-edge technology surpassing the contemporary standards, representing the new generation of main surface combatants in the US Navy.
The USS Zumwalt was officially commissioned on October 15, 2016.
On October 22, 2020, according to the US Naval Institute (USNI) website, at the beginning of the year, senior US Navy officials stated their intention to equip the Zumwalt-class destroyers with Intermediate-Range Conventional Prompt Strike (IR CPS) hypersonic missiles. However, the 34.5-inch (876 mm) diameter IR CPS is clearly incompatible with the 28-inch (710 mm) wide MK-57 portside vertical launch system (PVLS) on the Zumwalt-class. According to recent information obtained by USNI, the US Navy plans to replace the two Advanced Gun Systems (AGS) at the bow with Multipurpose Ammunition Canisters (MAC) used by nuclear submarines.
On January 16, 2025, local time, according to The War Zone (TWZ), a series of images were released for the first time, showcasing four large launch tubes already installed on the Zumwalt, which will be used to launch the US Navy's Intermediate-Range Conventional Prompt Strike (IRCPS) hypersonic missiles.
