Description

I have combined the music box with a kinetic water ripple automaton.  A music box has always been to me something of dreams and romanticism, while kinetic sculptures evoke a sense of wonder about our natural world. The rippling effect is similar to sound waves moving in rhythm. There is also a small drawer for keepsakes.

This Water Ripple Music Box has been designed for the Piano Music Box Hand Winding Kit - K015.

Note on tolerances:
I have test printed almost 15 versions of these using PLA Basic in different tolerances and fit-designs. Tolerances have been kept quite tight, but depending on calibration, some force might be needed if the fit is too tight, and a drop of glue if too loose.

The Cam Assembly:

The cam assembly has been kept relatively simple with minimal parts. And assembly made by a bottom-up approach, with the final being capping the entire mechanism with a top cap casing. There is an assembly guide to follow :)

How to get Smooth Turning of the Cam:
If the music box crank does not turn as smoothly, it might be due to height alignment being off while securing the music box to the base. I find that by loosening the screw nearest to the hand crank works very well to give a smooth turning. A bit of loosening trial and error usually does the trick.

"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples." - Mother Teresa

I have learnt much and been greatly inspired by the community here. I hope you will enjoy this music box, and continue creating ripples of inspirations in ways you might not even know.

I printed this using Bambu Lab's official PLA Basic with default settings. There are issues with the tolerances in this area. When the crank rotates, it gets stuck on the side protrusion. I sanded it a bit, but it only improved slightly. Additionally, this white gear doesn't seem perfectly round, causing the music box mechanism to lift at a certain position and pull out the screw.

The screw holes also have tolerances and are not suitable for M3 screws, but are better suited for M2.5.

Great model, and the kids are wowed with the mechanics. The screw holes for the music box were a little off, but I suspect that is due to a small difference in the length of the arm of the one in my kit.
