The Independence-class littoral combat ship (LCS) is one of the classes of the United States Navy's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) series.
The Independence-class littoral combat ship originated in the early 1990s as part of the US SC-21 surface combatant program. It is a trimaran experimental ship representing the transformation of US naval vessels after the Cold War. Primarily used for coastal warfare in global waters, the ship's hull features a modular structure, utilizing advanced materials and propulsion systems. It is capable of carrying unmanned aircraft, unmanned surface vessels, and underwater vehicles. Its shallow draft and high speed, combined with the ability to flexibly adjust combat modules according to different mission requirements, enable a "plug-and-play" capability.
The design of the Independence-class littoral combat ship began in 2003 by General Dynamics. The lead ship began construction on January 19, 2006, at the Austal USA shipyard, was launched on April 26, 2008, and commissioned on January 16, 2010. A total of 13 ships were built by 2018, with 7 already in service.
