Description

  • It is recommended to use 1/4 size strings.
  • Two bridge .stl files with different heights are provided.
  • An offset chinrest .stl file is also included

This 1/8-scale violin is designed specifically for 3D printing using PLA+ filament, striking a balance between stiffness, damping properties, and cost-effectiveness. The entire design is tailored around the mechanical and acoustic characteristics of PLA+. While carbon fiber filaments may theoretically yield a brighter tone, I have not tested them myself.

Due to PLA+ having a higher density and slightly lower stiffness than traditional spruce (commonly used in acoustic instruments), this design focuses on enhancing the overall sound projection, particularly in the higher frequency range.

The violin body adopts a low-arch profile, inspired by Francois Denis’ Traité de Lutherie: The Violin and the Art of Measurement. The outline has been modified to preserve the primary acoustic chamber while optimizing it for 3D printing and tonal performance.

Both the top and back plates are thinner than those of traditional violins, with variable thickness to improve tonal response. The edges are especially thin to boost responsiveness, and the bass bar has been slightly reshaped to maintain structural integrity.

The neck includes a slight pre-bend, which naturally straightens when all four strings are installed and properly tuned.

A custom-designed worm gear-style string tension system is included. All gears are printed in eSUN PLA+, and after building seven violins, I have not experienced any gear failures.
