The Pyotr Velikiy cruiser (English: Pyotr Velikiy Cruiser, Russian: Пётр Великий, Pennant number: 099, Soviet name: Юрий Андропов, Translation: Yuri Andropov, Original Pennant number: 183) is a nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser of the Russian Navy, the fourth ship of the Soviet Union's 1144-class cruisers (NATO designation: Kirov class).
The Pyotr Velikiy cruiser is the largest non-aircraft carrier warship in the world by tonnage, and the only currently active non-aircraft carrier nuclear-powered surface combatant. It is mainly used for long-range anti-ship, anti-submarine, and air defense operations.
In combat, it primarily serves as the core of a naval task force, forming a missile cruiser squadron with other ships to attack enemy warships and disrupt their lines of communication.
The Pyotr Velikiy cruiser was laid down on April 25, 1986, at the Baltic Shipyard, launched on April 29, 1989, and commissioned on April 19, 1998. It is the flagship of the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet.
