Description

REVISION HISTORY

  • 2023-07-19: v1 - Initial release
  • 2023-10-19: v2 - Updated to address the flaws of the original design; now made to be modular.

If you find that this adapter works great for you, pls hit that BOOST button!

This is spool adapter for Bambu Lab AMS that can fit a wide range of 200g/250g mini spools. See illustration for sample 250g spools that can be accommodated.

Version 2 addresses the flaws of the original design where the spindle will break easily either by overtightening or by dropping the spool. This release now has the spindle printed separately from the spool, made wider and is now horizontally oriented for added strength.

PROBLEM

  • The Bambu Lab AMS cannot use 250g spools due to its small size
  • Adapters for 250g spool currently available are designed for specific brand of spools therefore each spool needs an adapter printed

SOLUTION

Design an adapter for 250g spools that can be printed once and can be reused over and over catering to a wide variety of the mini spools.

The threaded hub design lets you spin the spool clockwise to tighten, counter clockwise to unlock, which makes the adapter super quick and easy to transfer to another mini spool!

WARNING / IMPORTANT NOTES

  1. Printing profile - please make sure you print the spool with 4 or more walls for added strength.
  2. Supports are NOT needed on any of the parts.
  3. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN as you might split the thread layers
  4. Proper filament types. Ensure that you have properly calibrated your filament and that the layers strongly adhere. Otherwise, you risk delaminating the layers. DO NOT USE SILK AND MATTE FILAMENT as layer adhesion of these type of filaments are usually not strong enough for these types of applications.

ASSEMBLY

works ok. definitely need a rubber band or washer of some variety to keep it from loosening. have had to tighten it a couple times but was afraid to make it too tight based on designer's notes.

Thanks for sharing your prints! You're probably not able to tighten it properly coz you have the spacer on the wrong side of the spool. If you move it to the opposite side, there would be more area for the threads to grip. Pls see illustration.

I get so many small spools for testing purposes I'm about to print my third adapter and they've worked for every spool except one. For the one with too wide an ID I just kitbashed an adapter from your parts. The thin outer ring of the centric ring barely catches the inner diameter of the problem roll so I doubled it's thickness and attached it to your spacer cut to half thickness. This way I can use it on thin rolls as an additional spacer. What I've tried: TecSonar and Tinmorry CB (carboard) 250g both with identical measurements to Amolen. Tttyt 3D & MKOEM & Bblife all use the same plastic 250g spool as MIKA3D BUD3D CB 250g [ 150 mm OD / 53 mm ID / 35 mm width ] Creality 200g plastic [141 mm OD / 55 mm ID / 38 mm width ] 3DGenius and Dikale 3D both use 250g CB [140 mm OD / 58 mm ID / 43 mm width ] The brand I had to custom make an adapter for due to its large ID Inslogic 200g CB [135 mm OD / 63 mm ID / 40mm width ]

Super well designed! Fits my 250g spools from iSANMATE I will be printing more of these. Love the "hidden" bambu logos in the spool design

thanks! Fits 190mm xingtongzhilian brand spools to use on AMS with a closed lid. The inside of the spool is 74mm maybe someone can make a bigger centric ring to help center the spool, but i just kind of align and tighten it and it works ok.

Worked great for 200g Locyfens spools! (OD-136/ID-50/Width-31) Printed in Inland PLA+ Neon Green, 4 walls, .2 layer height I did print an additional spacer and changed it from 12mm to 24mm, since the Locyfens' spools are so narrow. Although it may have worked fine with the 12mm spacer, I used the 24mm one and it made the width perfect for my AMS. The bolt did give me a warning from Bambu Studio that the "object has a floating cantilever and to re-orient or enable support generation"...I did neither and it printed fine. Thanks for a great, sturdy design!

Thanks for a very detailed review and for providing the spool dimensions! Good thinking on thickening the spacer. I did not make it thick thinking that people might not use it for consuming additional filament/plastic. Anyway, one last note: In the picture, you have the spacer oriented wrong. The "pointed" side of the spacer should be facing the mini spool. This ensures filament slides toward the mini spool and not away from it. But with that wide of a spacer, I don't think it's going to be an issue LOL

This works great and it's nice to be able to use the mini spools I have in the AMS. It was just kind of spinning at first, but once I tightened it down good it worked perfectly. Thank you.
