Description
Hello!
I'm excited to share my latest project – a 3D printable solder fume extractor designed to efficiently remove soldering fumes without blowing them back into your face.
🔍 The Problem with Most Fume Extractors:
Many models (including my previous one and several others I tested) suffer from the same issue:
With a powerful fan, the fumes often get pushed straight through the filter and out the back – meaning you still end up inhaling them.
✅ My Solution:
This design features a dual-filter system – one filter in the front and another at the back.
Through testing, this setup proved to be the most effective at actually capturing fumes.
🧲 Key Features:
- Magnetic mounting system for easy filter replacement (thanks to some free magnets I got from Bambu 😄)
- No unnecessary electronics – a minimalist, practical design
- Easy to assemble – just a few components and a bit of soldering, without screws etc.
🧰 What You’ll Need:
- 120x120 mm 12V fan – ideally 3200 RPM
- 12V power supply – any basic one, mine came from LED strip lighting
- ON/OFF switch –
- Cutout size: 12.3 mm x 19.3 mm
- My switch model: KCD1-101
- 8x2 mm neodymium magnets ×16
- Carbon filter
🖨️ Parts to Print:
- Base – main housing where the fan snaps in
- BackCover – back panel with a push-in mounting system
- CableCover – a cap to protect the cable from being pulled out
- FilterCover ×2 – one for the front, one for the back
Recommended material: PLA or PETG
🛠️ Assembly Guide:
- Snap the fan into the Base – it should fit tightly.
- Insert the ON/OFF switch and solder the wires as follows:
Fan's positive wire → to one switch terminal Power supply positive → to the other switch terminal Fan's negative → directly to power supply negative
3. Cover your cables with the BackCover
4. Glue in the magnets:
- Insert 8x2 mm magnets into the dedicated slots on both sides of the Base and inside the two FilterCovers.
- Use a strong adhesive (like CA glue or epoxy) to ensure they stay in place.
5. Attach the filters using the magnetic FilterCovers – done!
📌 Summary:
This is a simple, efficient, and functional fume extractor that actually does its job – no more breathing in solder fumes!
Perfect for hobbyists and makers who value clean air and clean design.
If you print and build it, I'd love to see your version!
Feedback and suggestions are always welcome 🔧💨
