Description

Ikea Alex drawers are (almost) great. They are large and flat which is fantastic for organizing. They also fit a 14x10 gridfinity grid almost perfectly. There is just one issue.  The drawers only partially extend. And because the drawers are flat about 1/3rd of the drawer is unusable. So here is my mod to switch the original slides with fully extendible  slides. I tried to use the original drawer side walls, but unfortunately the new slides are significantly wider (of course they are, the need an additional slider). And of course, since all I have is a hammer, eh, 3d printer, I printed new side walls.

If you want to replicate this you need some additional hardware:

Per drawer:
- 2x drawer slides (400mm length, I use these: https://ms-beschlaege.de/vollauszug-schubkastenschiene-schubladenauszug-400mm-hoehe-35mm-teleskopauszug )

- 4x M4 heat inserts

- 4x M4 screws, about 1cm long

- 4x Thin (3mm diameter) wood screws (about 2-3cm long), countersunk

- 4x Short woodscrews (shorter than the cabinet walls are thick, so about 1cm), not countersunk

- Glue

To assemble it you need to glue the back and front pieces together using the connectors. Insert the M4 heat inserts into the to two holes of each side wall. Then you need to glue the side walls into the front of the drawer. Slide in the bottom (I also recommend glue it in place). Next, screw in the back wall using the thin wood screws (! drill pilot holes, or the wood will split !). Lastly, use the drill guide to drill new mounting holes for the drawer slides into the cabinets. Attach the slides, insert the drawer, and done.

! Note: One reason drawers are usually not fully extendible is because cabinets can tip over if heavy drawers are fully extended. Use with care or secure the cabinet to a wall. !
