2-XL Talking Robot Toy Model Mego Co. 1980's
Print Profile(1)

Description
This is a miniature replica model of the super popular late 70's early 80's 2-XL talking trivia robot. At the time, it was voted one of the one of the top ten most popular toys of all time. I played with mine so much as a kid in the early 80's that the 8-track cassette tapes it used to play the trivia games got worn down. Kid's loved it because the voice of the robot was fun and he told corny jokes between questions. Parents loved it because the kids were learning while they played.
The original 2-XL was decent sized to play larger 8-track tapes and I wanted a model of it but not the full sized original. Using several photos I sourced on the internet, I recreated the robot with pretty good attention to details and scale, but standing only about 7" (180mm) tall [coffee mug for scale in photo], he is the perfect size to sit on my display shelf without taking up too much space.
PRINTING: My model prints in pieces to maximize print quality as well as only requiring 1 AMS unit. For the main body, I used a light army brown color PLA I found on Amazon. Everything else is your common red, yellow, white, black, and like a lavender color for the labels. The white faces part (I actually used a bone white for this since the original 2-XL plastic wasn't a bright white color) and the red top disk are printed at an angle to minimize layer lines as these parts are dome shaped.
ASSEMBLY: The front and back halves of the robot body join together with 6 dowels. I used some epoxy to glue the halves together but it's only a display model so any glue should work. Once you get the halves glued together and the glue has cured, attach the face, labels, eyes, buttons, and volume dial with whatever glue you wish. A little medium or thick CA glue is fine. Also, there is a little black disk with the two eyes. The little disk goes in the indentation where the power cord plugs into. If you want, print the eyes red. They updated the eyes later on in production and they lit up red when the robot talked.
Boost Me (for free)
This model was a labor of love and it took me way longer than I should have spent making this guy lol. If you love it, please show it by boosting my robot! Thank you :)
