Lead ship of the Kiev-class aircraft carriers
The Kiev (Russian: Киев, English: Kiev) aircraft carrier was a Soviet Navy aircraft carrier, the lead ship of the Soviet Navy's Project 1143 Kresta I class, and the second generation and first class of fixed-wing carrier-borne aircraft developed by the Soviet Union.
The Kiev was the world's first aircraft carrier to carry vertical/short takeoff and landing fighters. It was also equipped with shipboard weapons possessing anti-ship, anti-air, and all-around anti-submarine capabilities, and a powerful firepower strike capability. Its primary mission was to conduct anti-submarine and air superiority/anti-air defense operations, serve as the fleet command ship, perform aerial reconnaissance and surveillance, attack enemy carrier battle groups and surface vessels, provide over-the-horizon anti-ship missile attacks, relay guidance, or target designation for other surface vessels and submarines, support amphibious operations, and conduct vertical landings, etc.
Named after the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, the Kiev was laid down on July 21, 1970, at the Nikolayev Shipyard, launched on December 26/27, 1972, and commissioned in February 1977. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the ship was inherited by Russia, but due to the economic weakness resulting from the collapse of the Soviet Union, it was formally decommissioned on June 30, 1993, and subsequently sold to China, where it was transformed into the Tianjin TEDA Aircraft Carrier Theme Park.
