Description

This is a remix of JA Design's Pocket-Sized Coin Holder for Japanese Yen. If you enjoy this model and want to boost it, please do so on JA Design's original, not this remix.

Note: I wanted to upload this model as an actual remix, although due to the original's license I am unable to. Thus, it is uploaded as an original. I have received explicit permission from JA Design to do this. I have included STEP files as they did for me so that others can further iterate on the design. That being said, JA Design has final say on how their model is used, so please direct all remix/reuse inquiries directly to them.

I have modified the original coin holder in the following ways:

This version features two slots for 50円 and 100円 coins, replacing the original's 1円 and 500円 slots. I find I use the former two more often and wanted a larger amount of them on hand.

I also deigned a sleeve that includes a slot for an IC card so you can easily traverse Japan's public transit system.

From JA Design's original description:

A pocket-sized coin holder for Japanese yen, providing quick access to your coins. The model consists of 3 parts: a bottom cover, a top cover, and a frame. The model is held together through a friction fit; no supports or additional hardware are necessary.

Remix description additions:

The sleeve requires glue during assembly. Carefully apply a small bead of CA glue around the edges and wipe off any excess to prevent hazing. Clamp together with miniature spring clamps for a solid connection.

Assembly Instructions

Wait until the print has fully cooled before removing it from the build plate to prevent warping.

Glue can be applied to the 4 pegs between steps 2 & 3 to permanently secure the parts, but it is not necessary for the coin holder itself.

Glue must be applied as instructed in steps 5 & 6 when assembling the sleeve and card holder.

  1. Identify the corresponding bar and slot orientation between the frame and covers for proper alignment.
  2. Snap the bottom cover to the frame, pushing down on the 4 pegs.
  3. Snap the top cover to the frame, pushing down on the 4 pegs.
  4. Identify the inner groove of the bottom sleeve that connects the top sleeve, and the outer groove of the bottom sleeve that connects the card holder.
  5. Apply a thin bead of glue to the inner groove around the bottom sleeve and attach the top sleeve, pressing down all around and clamping or weighting with light pressure.
  6. Apply a thin bead of glue to the outer groove around the bottom sleeve and attach the card holder, pressing down all around and clamping or weighting with light pressure. Be careful not to get glue inside the card holder cavity.
  7. You may want to file/sand down the edges of the catch recesses of the frame halves in order to more easily insert and remove the coin holder from the sleeve. I've left the fit somewhat stiff in order to account for wear over time and so people can modify to their preference.

Disclaimers

Designed with 0.2 mm tolerances. Be careful to not use too much glue as it can leak out and ruin the surface look of the sleeve, or glue your fingers together. I tested the card holder using an ICOCA card from 2024, I'm assuming it will also fit SUICA cards but I cannot confirm.
